You are saved to serve. In this passage, Paul encourages his readers to continue to grow in their character (vv. 1–3), in their gifts (vv. 11–12), in their knowledge of the truth (vv. 13–15), and in their love for one another (vv. 2, 15–16). Paul mentions gifts as given by the grace of God and reminds us that their purpose is to prepare God’s people to serve (vv. 7, 11–12). Yet he tells his readers to be sure to grow in their character, instructing them to walk in humility, gentleness, peace, and love (vv. 1–3). We tend to place a lot of attention on our gifts and talents, but our character deserves the most attention. When our character is ready, God will give us the grace for our gifts to grow.
