Does One Person Really Matter to God | Jesus' Answer Will Surprise You

Have you ever wondered if your life truly matters?
In a world obsessed with numbers—followers, subscribers, attendance, influence, popularity, and success—it's easy to believe that significance belongs only to the crowd. We celebrate celebrities, packed stadiums, viral moments, and massive platforms. But Jesus counts differently.
In Luke 15:1–7, Jesus tells one of the most beloved parables in all of Scripture: The Parable of the Lost Sheep. At first glance, it's a simple story about a shepherd searching for a missing sheep. But beneath the surface lies one of the clearest pictures of the heart of God in the entire Bible.
This sermon explores why Jesus deliberately welcomed tax collectors and sinners while the religious leaders grumbled in self-righteousness. It explains why the Good Shepherd would leave ninety-nine sheep to pursue one that had wandered away, and why heaven erupts with joy over the repentance of a single sinner.
This isn't merely a lesson about evangelism.
It's a revelation of God's character.
You'll discover that the Shepherd is not passive—He pursues. He doesn't simply hope the lost return; He goes after them until He finds them. The sheep contributes nothing to its rescue. It cannot save itself, find its own way home, or carry itself back to safety. Instead, the Shepherd lovingly lifts the sheep onto His shoulders and carries it home rejoicing. It is a beautiful picture of Jesus Christ, who came into our broken world to seek and save those who could never save themselves.
In this message we'll explore:
• Why tax collectors and sinners continually drew near to Jesus while religious people stayed distant.
• What the Pharisees misunderstood about holiness and the heart of God.
• Why every person possesses immeasurable value because they are loved by their Creator.
• What the lost sheep symbolizes throughout Scripture.
• How the Shepherd points us directly to Jesus Christ.
• Why salvation begins with God's pursuit before it ever includes our response.
• Why heaven celebrates repentance more than earthly success.
• What it means for every believer to join Christ in His mission of seeking the lost.
This sermon also launches our church's "Who's Your One?" initiative—a simple but life-changing challenge for every follower of Jesus. The goal is that every believer prayerfully identifies one person God has placed in their life, prays faithfully for them, loves them intentionally, and looks for opportunities to share the hope of the gospel.
Because if one person mattered enough for Jesus to leave heaven...
...one person ought to matter enough for us to cross the street.
Perhaps your "one" is your son or daughter.
Your spouse.
Your coworker.
Your neighbor.
A friend you've known for years.
Or perhaps, as you're watching this today...
you are someone's one.
If you've ever felt forgotten, overlooked, rejected, or beyond God's grace, Jesus wants you to know something: He is the Shepherd who still searches. He still calls sinners to Himself. He still carries weary people home. And there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine who think they have no need.
No one is too broken to be found.
No one is too far gone to be pursued.
No one is beyond the reach of God's grace.
One conversation can change a life.
One prayer can change a family.
One invitation can change an eternity.
Because...
One really does matter.
