In this opening message from our new series through 1 Corinthians, Good News for Bad Christians, we look at 1 Corinthians 1:1–9 (ESV) and discover something surprising about the way Paul addresses one of the most dysfunctional churches in the New Testament.
Before Paul confronts the Corinthians about their division, pride, sexual sin, lawsuits, idolatry, spiritual immaturity, and disorder, he reminds them who they are in Jesus Christ: called, sanctified, gifted, and sustained by God. Their failures were real, but their failures were not their deepest identity.
We explore what Paul means when he calls believers “saints,” what the Greek word for “called” teaches us about God’s initiative in salvation, and what it means to be the church of God in Corinth—living within a culture without allowing that culture to define us.
The message of this passage is simple but powerful: the call of God is not merely an invitation to add Jesus to your life; it is a summons to reorganize your entire life around Jesus.
You may feel like you should be further along spiritually. You may see areas of disorder, weakness, failure, or immaturity in your life. But Paul reminds us that our confidence is not ultimately in the strength of our grip on Christ—it is in the strength of Christ’s grip on us.
God is faithful.
