How Christians Should Handle Conflict

In this message from our Good News for Bad Christians series, we walk through 1 Corinthians 1:10–17 (ESV) and Paul’s urgent appeal that there be no divisions in the church. The big idea of the message is simple: conflict is inevitable, but division isn’t—we cannot avoid disagreements, but we can choose whether those disagreements fracture our relationships. Using marriage, family life, and church life as examples, we look at the difference between genuine differences and simple distinctives, and why mature Christians refuse to make every difference a dividing line. Paul addresses relational division before many of Corinth’s other serious problems because the way Christians treat one another matters deeply to God. A healthy church is therefore not one where conflict never happens, but one where people increasingly learn how to disagree, reconcile, forgive, repair, and remain united around Jesus Christ.
One of the biggest dangers Paul exposes is the tendency to turn personal preferences into spiritual absolutes. The Corinthians were forming rival groups around Paul, Apollos, Cephas, and even Christ, and the same thing can happen today when Christians elevate preferences about preaching styles, worship music, church traditions, leadership models, clothing, or other secondary matters into tests of biblical faithfulness. A preference becomes dangerous when we stop saying, “I prefer this,” and begin saying, “God requires this,” when God has not actually said that. The message also confronts our tendency to label people and create narratives about them without ever speaking directly to them, reminding us that labels are often shortcuts that allow us to avoid the harder work of understanding one another. Instead of allowing preferences, assumptions, and words to produce tribes and walls, Christians are called to go directly to one another, listen carefully, discern the truth together, and allow torn relationships to be repaired rather than discarded.
Ultimately, Paul brings the church back to one decisive question: “Is Christ divided?” Paul, Apollos, and Peter may have been distinct leaders with different personalities and gifts, but none of them was crucified for the Corinthians, and none of them was meant to become the center of their identity. Christian leaders are like windows—their purpose is not to make people admire the glass, but to help people see through them to Jesus, so that the response to preaching becomes “What a Savior,” not merely “What a preacher.” The cross destroys every competing center, reminding us that every secondary identity, preference, personality, and tribe must bow beneath our primary allegiance to Christ. Most division begins with a preference, the preference becomes a judgment, the judgment becomes a label, the label creates a tribe, and the tribe eventually produces a wall—but the gospel calls us back to one crucified Lord who makes reconciliation and relational wholeness possible.
