The Wisdom of God vs. the Wisdom of the World

What does 1 Corinthians 2:6–16 teach about the wisdom of God, the Holy Spirit, spiritual discernment, and the mind of Christ? In this sermon from our series Good News for Bad Christians, we explore Paul’s contrast between the wisdom of this world and the eternal wisdom of God. The world can possess extraordinary education, knowledge, technology, influence, and sophistication while still missing the deepest spiritual realities revealed in Jesus Christ. Paul reminds us that the wisdom of this age is passing away, while God’s wisdom was established before the ages and revealed supremely through Christ crucified. The question every Christian must ask is not merely, “What does culture say is wise?” but “Whose wisdom is governing the way I live?”
Paul then explains how believers can know the wisdom of God: God reveals His truth through the Holy Spirit. Just as you cannot fully know another person’s thoughts unless they reveal them to you, no one can know the depths of God apart from the Spirit of God. Christians have received the Holy Spirit so that we can understand the things God has freely given us in Christ, including salvation, forgiveness, righteousness, adoption, grace, and new life. We do not know God simply because we became intelligent enough to discover Him; we know Him because God graciously revealed Himself and opened our eyes to spiritual truth. This passage shows why biblical wisdom and true spiritual understanding ultimately depend upon the Spirit of God rather than human wisdom alone.
Finally, 1 Corinthians 2:14–16 explains the difference between the natural person and the spiritual personand what it means to have “the mind of Christ.” The natural person may be highly intelligent and still consider the things of God foolish because spiritual truth must be spiritually discerned. Through the Holy Spirit, however, Christians are given a new way of seeing reality and increasingly learn to think according to Jesus Christ rather than according to the assumptions of the world. Having the mind of Christ changes the way we think about success, suffering, money, relationships, sexuality, ambition, forgiveness, power, purpose, and even death. God possesses the wisdom, the Spirit reveals the wisdom, and the believer receives the mind of Christ.
