Why Smart Christians Still Make Foolish Decisions

How is it possible for someone to possess tremendous biblical knowledge and yet remain spiritually immature? In 1 Corinthians 3:1–9, the Apostle Paul confronts believers who considered themselves wise and spiritual but whose behavior revealed something entirely different. Although they had received the gospel and possessed the mind of Christ, they continued behaving like spiritual infants. In this sermon, we examine the diagnosis, the cause, and the cure for spiritual immaturity. We discover that the greatest problem facing many Christians today is not a lack of information but a lack of genuine spiritual transformation.
When Paul tells the Corinthians that he fed them milk rather than solid food, he is not describing two different levels of Christianity or suggesting that mature Christians eventually graduate beyond the gospel. The milk and the meat point us back to the same Christ, the same cross, and the same saving truth, received with different degrees of spiritual maturity. The Corinthians wanted something more sophisticated while failing to understand how the gospel should transform their everyday lives. True spiritual maturity is not measured by how much theology we know, how many sermons we have heard, or how many Christian books we have read. It is revealed when the truth of God’s Word begins shaping our attitudes, decisions, relationships, and conduct.
Paul identifies the underlying cause of their immaturity as jealousy, strife, comparison, and a fleshly obsession with personalities and personal recognition. What begins as comparison in the heart eventually develops into envy, resentment, criticism, division, and broken relationships. In a world dominated by social media, personal achievement, and constant competition, these same destructive attitudes continue to infiltrate the lives of Christians and the church today. One of the clearest measurements of spiritual maturity is not simply what we know about God but how we treat the people around us. When another person’s success becomes a threat to our identity, we reveal how desperately we need the transforming power of the gospel.
Thankfully, Paul does not leave us with a diagnosis and a cause without revealing the cure. He reminds the Corinthians that while he planted and Apollos watered, it was God alone who gave the growth. This powerful truth destroys pride because we cannot take credit for what only God can accomplish, and it prevents despair because we are not responsible for manufacturing results that belong to God. Whether in our families, workplaces, friendships, or churches, our calling is to faithfully carry out the assignments God has entrusted to us, knowing that He rewards faithful labor rather than worldly recognition. Ultimately, the cure for spiritual immaturity is to stop making much of ourselves and other people, make much of Christ, and remember that we are responsible for faithfulness, but God is responsible for fruitfulness.
